About the School

Welcome

The town of Portsoy, serving the town, local rural areas and the village of Sandend approximately 3 miles away. The school is set back from the main Banff- Buckie road on one side and opens onto the town's Soy Park and Loch on the other.

The main part of the school dates from the 1800s, but has been added to and modernised in recent years. The school has a restricted tarred area marked out with playground games and a quiet seating area. The front of the school has a seating area, chute and climbing frame for Early Years and monkey bars and a climbing frame for older children.

The school's current roll is 141 in total which includes 30 pupils in nursery.

Portsoy School provides education for children aged 3 - 12 i.e. from ante pre-school nursery - P7.

Portsoy Primary School has 5 classes ranging from P1 - 7, and a Nursery, which runs from 8 am to 6 pm, within agreed morning & afternoon sessions. The Head Teacher is non class committed. The school also works closely with a range of other support agencies and volunteers in order to provide the best possible experience for children with additional support needs.

Our Active Schools Coordinator provides a range of additional active and sporting activities for the children.

In addition to our 5 full-time teaching staff, we also have an Early Years Lead Practitioner and 4 Early Years Practitioners, 4 part-time Pupil Support Assistants, 1 part-time School Administrator, 1 part-time Admin Support Assistant, 6 Kitchen Staff, 2 Cleaners and a part-time Janitor.

Portsoy School is part of the Banff Cluster, liaising and working co-operatively with the Academy and other schools in the Cluster Group.

Community links are a valued part of school life. The school has formed many links with groups and organisations within the community.  Our Parent Support Group, The 75 Club and The Thrift Shop have provided a great deal of support in the form of funding to enable the school to purchase reading books, resources and classroom furniture.

The children and the school have also been heavily involved in the annual Traditional Boat Festival, Folk Festival, Boat Building Project and Salmon Bothy events. Through interdisciplinary activities children have also made links with, Durnhythe Care Home, Seafield Estates and Forest Ranger.  The school has connections with the emergency services, who take part in our Health Week each year.

Devolved budgets are managed in accordance with authority guidelines in order to support planned improvements in the school.

 The school was last inspected in December 2013. Actions were identified from this inspection and a full copy of this report can be read on the HMIe website www.hmie.gov.uk.

The school is accredited at commended level as a Health Promoting School, a Bronze Eco School Award and Rights Respecting Schools Record of Commitment (ROC).
